Having an elliptical trainer as a cardio workout companion pays handsome health dividends. Improved cardiovascular function, overall conditioning, and healthy weight loss due to a revved up metabolism, are all part and parcel of the benefits of an elliptical trainer package.

Although these machines were primarily developed as a low-impact exercise solution, elliptical trainers have become superb general fitness tools. They offer continuous motion, without the commotion, so to speak!

With the help of the firm footing provided by the elliptical trainer’s footpads or footplates, the user ‘walks’ with a natural, smooth, flowing movement. The result is bone-strengthening, weight-bearing, fat-burning, aerobic exercise, without the jarring that is a major cause of joint injuries.

You will have a riot on your hands if only your hips, glutes, and legs are called to ‘gym’ service. Maintain bodily harmony and peace, by looking at elliptical trainers that sport crosstraining handlebars. This will get your upper body into the game, placating complaining hips and thighs.

By following this strategy, you maximize the calorie-burning benefit you derive from your time on the elliptical trainer. At the same time, you will be strengthening your arms, back, chest, and shoulders.

Elliptical Trainer – A Basic Checklist:

Adjustable Resistance: As your body adapts to the cardio workout, and your aerobic capacity increases, you will need an adjustable resistance feature to maintain the effectiveness off the elliptical trainer program. Look for a machine that offers this feature at the push of a button. You don’t want to lose your momentum, while changing gear.

Backing Up Is Beneficial: An elliptical trainer should offer both forward and reverse motion. This prevents repetitive strain injuries, by cajoling different muscles into action. It also adds variety to your exercise routine, maintaining interest.

Concise Consoles: Make sure that you will be able to understand the workings of the elliptical trainer’s console. Functionality and clear programming are vital. Some machines conveniently accommodate more than one user.

Do-It-Yourself: Most elliptical trainers feature a wide variety of pre-set programs – more than enough to test your limits for some time. However, you may want the option to customize programs to allow for your particular needs. Check that this will be possible.

Even Fluency: When testing an elliptical trainer, a clear sign of the quality of the machine, is the fluency of the motion, and a low noise level. Any sign of instability, is a sign to focus on a different model.

Footprint Fit: If space is a problem, an elliptical trainer may be an ideal option, as it usually is quite a compact piece of fitness equipment. Many models come with wheels for no-fuss mobility.

Heart Rate Monitor: Most elliptical trainers feature hand grip sensors on the handlebars. In any cardiovascular exercise program, it is vital to monitor your heart rate, in order to make adjustments to the workout intensity. A heart monitor strap may also be available.

Incline Incentive: A quality elliptical trainer will have as one of its features, an 0% to 10% adjustable incline, allowing you to up the ante as your muscle power increase. For maximum cardiovascular and strength-building benefits, it is important to retain an element of challenge in your routine.

Jolts And Jars: When testing an elliptical trainer, look for a completely smooth movement, without any jolts or bouncyness in the footpads.

Knee-Demands: An elliptical trainer often is a suitable option to consider, if you are experiencing any knee problems. The natural movement promotes proper alignment of ankle, knee, and hip. However, it is always safe to check with a health practitioner, if you have any medical concerns.

Length Of Stride: Test the elliptical trainer to make sure that it is completely comfortable. Don’t let the machine cramp your style!

All the prominent manufacturers have designed state-of-the-art, feature-rich crosstrainers. The only way to make sure that you find the perfect partner for your cardio workout, is to thoroughly test a wide range of elliptical trainers.

A Treadmill veteran’s Home Consumers Info on Deciding on an Elliptical machine

During the last few yearsElliptical trainers took the fitness industry by storm. What was formerly a fad relegated to late night infomercials now is possibly the single most dominant machine in the majority of health clubs and personal training centers.

Let’s get started with the guide by taking a look at the variations between a treadmill and an elliptical trainer. The most immediate thing you’re going to notice is that the elliptical trainer is actually entirely impact free. What this means is you will no longer encounter the lower joint pain most linked with running. Possibly even a running machine with great shock absorbtion and an orthopedic belt, while better than jogging on pavement, will still abuse the knees and ankles.

On the other hand, a treadmill is much better for targeted training for joggers and runners. You will never train properly for that marathon by using an elliptical trainer. As close as the feel of any elliptical trainer would be to walking or jogging, it’s nevertheless not as good as actually running.

Now, let us take a short look at the “pain” of jogging. Recent surveys show people to work out harder and longer on ellipticals simply because the perceived amount of effort appears much less. The more “comfortable” a workout, the longer and harder someone goes. This is one of the main reasons a good deal of seniors and elderly exercisers took to the elliptical trainer so eagerly.

Another glaring difference is the crosstraining arms most ellipticals have (with two or three exceptions for example the majority of the Precor elliptical units). By having the crosstraining bars, the elliptical gives you an extra aspect in your training session — strength training. Practically all physical fitness experts agree that all proper workout routines need to have a strength training element and the elliptical trainer packages it together with the cardiovascular training fairly effectively.

Let’s talk about what to look for in an elliptical trainer. First, what’s best, a front wheel or rear wheel elliptical machine. Truth be told, they both work the exact same. Somebody who tells you differently is simply aiming to see you a bill of goods. They provide you with precisely the same workout. The only real difference is if you’re a more robust individual or if you are on a light weight (or less robust) piece of equipment. In this case, the front drives will definitely feel a great deal sturdier. This is because whenever you workout by using an elliptical trainer, you’re going to be throwing all of your weight forward. Having the drive and heavy flywheel upfront will help to balance you out. Larger flywheels are better because they have a tendency to last longer as well as provide more sturdiness to the machine.

Most elliptical exercise machines have magnetic brakes and you shouldn’t mess with anything else. The friction based brakes tended to wear out too quickly, so stay clear of any dinosaur machines that still use them.

Stride is probably the very most important features on an elliptical machine simply because they have the most to do with comfort. Longer strides are better on ellipticals — unless, of course, you’re a shorter person, however for most people strides of 18″ or longer are the best. Personally, I’ve find 20-21 inch strides to be the best for anybody up to about 6’4″. Anything shorter than 18″ will likely be uncomfortable for many individuals.

Footpads: make sure the unit you are considering has articulating footpads. The reason for this is because elliptical traininers with static footpads (such as the Tunturi machines) might cause your feet to start to go numb on longer workout sessions. This is from the shortage of circulation attributed to the static pedals. Try to find footpads that flex with your feet.

Stuff like programs, pulse rate management and personal fans are nice, but the above points are probably the main points to watch out for. Also, check out the sense of how you would mount an elliptical. There is two forms of mounting — side mount machines (for instance the Precor 546 or Star Trac Rear Drive) and rear mount machines (like the Matrix E5x or Horizon EX44). A few individuals have a little bit of difficulty on mounting from the side and should look into rear drive options. As with the position of the flywheel, rear-mount versus side-mount elliptical machines work exactly the same way.

The simplest way to pick out an elliptical exercise machine would be to go to either a health club or local sports retailer and give them a shot. Be warned, tho, once you exercise on a commercial grade elliptical exerciser, it’s hard to transition over to a residential grade one. The leading edge commercial elliptical exercise machines are by Star Trac, Matrix, Precor and Life Fitness. The very best residential grade ellipticals include Horizon, New Balance and Endurance. Fitnex and Spirit / Sole are perfect mid range brands that do an exellent job of giving commercial quality workouts for not a whole lot more than the residential price.

I bought one of these from a local dealer. Earlier, from 5.17 to 4 years. With Precor, it is very difficult to do something else – the quality of use is big business. The warranty is a big plus. I called them after 3 years to see if the wheels are never quiet what they should do, they sent new wheels at once, politeness, no shipping or anything! Wonderful customer service.

The biggest change from 5.17 is so quiet and that’s it! I thought we had a great 5.17, but jump on this premium model actually makes a difference. Anyway, the wheels are almost silent and is a luxurious take on this matter. But it’s really a workout! I religiously use a heart rate monitor, but also makes it softer, which is easy – my heart rate shot anyway, and 5.17. This is what counts!

We love the new format – including electronics, is amazing compared to our old model, but the best feature is the unused weapon. It is able to return / back depending on our mood, it was a total sales. We could have saved $ 200, drops to 5.35 receives a number of functions, but if you spend money – $ 200 is definitely worth at the top of the line.

The only real advice I can give? Our local dealer is very, very expensive – plus all came and configuration. These things healthy margins, so negotiate. If you do not get a discount of at least 20%, something is wrong.

We have our old 5.17 for 2500 and sold it for $ 1000 4 years later. That’s about $ 400/year, which is comparable to a decent gym membership – but it is much easier to take home. Precor is awesome!

Solid Machine, Great Workout

I will first start off by saying I workout at least 5 days a week and travel a lot. As such, I have used numerous different elliptical trainers and can thoroughly state that this is the be I have tried yet.

That being said, if you have ever used a Precor trainer, you’ll be pretty familiar with all of the features which seem to be standard. One of the things I have not noticed on any other machine is the adjustable arms. You can switch them between fixed or moving. Sometimes I prefer to not use the arms so I found this very handy.

Another Great feature is the Heart Rate Monitoring. This trainer has both the hand grips and the ability to receive a reading through a chest strap. I much prefer the chest strap as I find it to be much more accurate than the handgrips. It does come with a Polar chest strap, but you can use any other Polar chest strap as well. My wife and I both have straps from Polar watches and it integrates seemlessly.

The display is easy to read and is very straight forward. You can choose to customize your workouts or use any number of the presets. Truly you can get a different type of workout everyday if you choose. Another feature that I have not seen before is the ability save user info for 4 different users. Once you’ve created a profile it will keep track of things like your favorite workouts, best times, and calories burned. This really helps to keep you motivated to go for more.

Overall, I can’t say enough about how great this is. The only potential downsides are the cost and the size of the machine. If cost is an issue for you, there may be other machines out there that fit your needs, but this is hands down the best quality in my opinion. I also mention size, which truly should not be a concern for if you are looking for an elliptical — they all take up space, but you should measure out your space to ensure this doesn’t become the focal point of your room.

CheapPrecor EFX 5.37 Premium Series Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer

Beautiful & Strong. A Premium Elliptical, a Corresponding Price

Let me start by saying that I’ve wanted a good home elliptical machine for years. I’m a software engineer, and sitting at a computer all day is not the best exercise. I’m not a professional trainer or a marathon runner so I don’t have that type of perspective on this machine. However, I have been using it consistently since I put it together, so while I’m not a fitness expert, I’ve used it enough to give it a good, full review.

This is one seriously expensive piece of machinery, no doubt about it. At this price point, I would expect to receive an elliptical trainer that is absolutely flawless. There are way too many other options out there to seriously entertain the prospect of putting down this much cash on a machine that is anything less than perfect. Seriously, if I sold both my car and my motorcycle tomorrow, I’d be shocked if I got enough for them to equal the cost of this elliptical.

But enough about me and my aging vehicles. The shipping for this item mirrored the shipment of my Precor 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill almost exactly. The delivery guy dropped it off at my front door and waited while I opened the box and moved it, piece by piece, into my house so that he could get his pallet back. You have the option of having them put the box in your garage instead, but as I stated in that review, that option wouldn’t have worked for me.

Moving the elliptical machine inside took several minutes and several trips. It contains a number of large and unwieldy parts, the biggest and heaviest of which was the pre-assembled ramp/pedal/motor section. Luckily, this part has wheels on the motor end, which is by far the heaviest end. It was actually relatively simple to lift the light end and roll it around to wherever I wanted it. However, if you are small in stature and/or unable to lift heavy objects I would definitely recommend having help. That goes for both moving the parts around and for the actual installation.

In addition to the machine itself, the crate included a coupon for a free professional installation by a Precor expert, a nice looking rubber mat to protect your floor, and two Precor-stamped water bottles. If you decide not to follow the recommendation of professional installation, an assembly guide is included so you can put it together by yourself. Mine also included an addendum to the assembly guide, which added to the instructions and negated a couple of steps due to changes made in how the parts were shipped. Of course I didn’t see this until after I had completed the build, which led to a little confusion during assembly. Luckily, it all worked out correctly and I didn’t have to redo anything.

=== ASSEMBLY ===

Taking my time to make sure everything was done right the first time, the full assembly took me a couple of hours, but an extra pair of hands would likely have made that go faster.

Your best bet is to lay the mat down exactly where you want the elliptical to go, with the tapered end facing forward, and rolling the large main assembly into position on the mat with the motor cover end facing the rear. This way you’ll be able to put the machine together without having to move it when you’re done. When choosing a place to put it, note the location of any ceiling fans. While it doesn’t matter to my 5’5″ girlfriend, I’m 6 feet tall and at times can get uncomfortably close to ceiling fan blades while on the elliptical. I solved the problem by moving it closer to the edge of the room.

The assembly of the machine itself was relatively straightforward thanks to a clear and detailed manual. You’ll need a pair of scissors (the manual says wire cutters, but anything that will cut those plastic zip ties will work), a crescent wrench (I couldn’t find mine, so I used open wrenches instead. A 1/2″ and a 3/8″ wrench will do the job), and a socket wrench with a 1/2″ socket and an extension. You will also need three different sizes of allen wrench, but these are provided in the box.

Once you have that stuff in hand, it’s just a matter of “screw this to this, with this” a couple dozen times. It’s really not quite as bad as it looks when you’re staring at all of the components strewn about the floor.

=== BUILD QUALITY ===

One thing you’ll notice about the 5.37 from the moment you open the box is that its component parts are all heavy and solid, built to last. This is great news, considering the fact that all of those moving parts are going to take a lot of punishment, especially at the moving joints. The front and rear covers, the display, and the pedals are a heavy duty plastic, the crossramp is aluminum, and the rest is an incredibly strong powder coated steel. The connecting rods in particular feel like they came straight off of a tank. The handles on the moving grips and the heart rate grips are a mix of metal and a high quality rubber material. It’s practically seamless, so there seems to be no way that the rubber will ever start to pull loose over time.

The wheels on the ramp are sort of like a super heavy duty version of roller blade wheels. They are perfectly positioned from the factory, so you won’t have to worry about them running against the rails and getting damaged over time. They also provide near-silent operation. As a whole this machine is whisper-quiet, but the wheels seem to emit no sound whatsoever. The action is smooth too. With no power to the motor, you can push on one of the pedals and there is so little friction that it will complete one or two revolutions before coming to a stop.

=== FEATURES ===

Many of the features are already listed in the product description, but here are few additions/enhancements:

First of all, I have never seen the convertible grip feature on an elliptical before, and it’s really quite cool. You can convert the swinging arms into stationary arms. It only takes a few seconds to do and it really changes your workout. You can feel your lower body working harder, and your midsection seems to get a better workout due to the extra balance required if you’re not hanging onto the grips.

The adjustable stride is a nice feature, although it’s more of a “set it once” kind of thing for me. Maybe as I improve I’ll try changing it to see if it will help me concentrate on different muscles. The pedals themselves are only 3 inches apart — this is great for maintaining a comfortable walking style. Some ellipticals have the pedals too far apart and it doesn’t feel as natural.

The display panel is very similar to that of the Precor 9.35 Premium Series Treadmill. If you look at the photo that shows the display, you’ll see the calorie burn counter at the top left and the heart rate display at top right. Below those is an orange/green/orange strip that shows your heart rate graphically against different “zones” (warmup, fat burning, cardio, and peak). Directly below that is the graph display that shows you where you are within your current program, and the current crossramp incline setting. Then there’s a single-line scrolling display that can show you the program completion percentage, alert you to an upcoming change in resistance, as well as display a number of different metrics including max heart rate, average heart rate, vertical distance traveled, program completion percentage, calories burned per minute/hour, and several more. Along the bottom, you’ll see four more displays: Elapsed Time/Time Remaining (with a toggle button), Crossramp incline, Resistance, and Distance/Pace/Strides Per Minute (with a toggle button).

You can save the information for up to four separate users. You enter a name, age, and weight, and the 5.37 will save all of the user’s cumulative data (total distance, strides, calories burned, etc) since they created the profile. It also remembers your favorite programs and best times, and uses your information to determine your target heart rate.

In addition to the heart rate monitoring hand grips, the 5.37 comes with a wireless chest strap that will communicate data to the elliptical. Personally, I prefer the chest strap because it gives you constant data, while the grips only give you heart rate data while you are holding them. My girlfriend is the opposite, mainly because she doesn’t like the fact that the chest strap gets sweaty.

Above the display there’s a place for a water bottle, wide enough even to accommodate one of those large sports drink bottles. There’s also a shelf for a phone/mp3 player, etc. and a lower compartment for magazines and whatnot. On the display face is a strip that can be used to hold a magazine or book in front of you in the open position.

=== USAGE ===

There are a number of different programs to choose from. They’re separated by type, such as “Weight Loss”, “Heart Rate”, “Variety”, “Performance”, etc. so you can just hit the button for the type you want and then scroll through the different options. For those times when you have a specific goal that you’d like to achieve, there is a goal mode. This allows you to select your goal and the computer will determine how you can achieve that goal. For example (and I’m not using real numbers here, it’s just an example) let’s say you want to set a calorie goal — you want to burn 500 calories. You can enter your goal of 500 calories, and the computer will set a crossramp incline of 6, a resistance of 5.0, and a Time Remaining of 1.5 hours. Don’t have that kind of time? Just make an adjustment at any time to your incline or resistance and the time to complete will be reduced accordingly. Whichever goal you choose (calories, time, distance, etc.), the way in which you get there can be adjusted on the fly.

Of course, if you’re not in the mood to set programs or anything, you can just hit the “Quick Start” button and be on your way.

There’s also a “Fitness Test” program that monitors your heart rate while slowly increasing the difficulty over time for 15 minutes. It then assigns you a number based on your fitness level. It’s a great way to see your improvement over time. It’s also a great way to scare yourself into better shape.

=== CONCLUSION ===

I said at the beginning that in order to be worth this price, an elliptical would have to be absolutely perfect. Well, so far I haven’t been able to find anything to complain about. It’s attractive and solidly built. The display is big and contains a lot of useful information at a glance, and the workout computer is great. It’s a comfortable, ergonomic stride. There’s no shaking or wobbling whatsoever — it might as well be bolted to the floor. It’s extremely quiet, impossible to hear in the next room even with the door open. There’s no squeaking or rubbing, like I’ve seen with some other models. As of this review, I have not heard of any other elliptical with convertible arms like this one. Even the rubber mat that comes with it is attractive!

If you’re a bit worried about the cost, it might be worthwhile to go to the Precor website and use the Product Comparison tool to look at what the differences are between the models. If you don’t need the convertible arms, for example, you could probably find something at a lower price point that suits your needs.

As is usually the case with my big ticket item reviews, I will update it over time with more information about how well it performs over the long term. In the meantime, feel free to make any update suggestions or requests, photo requests, etc. I’ll do my best to give you the information you need.

Cardio for the Fail

Its amazing how some gym myths are so hard to die. Ask just about anyone at the gym these days and they will sell you the common wisdom: “Cardio is the way to lose weight.” But the truth is that I’ve seen people workout on cardio equipment for years and they have not lost any significant weight at all.

These are dedicated gym rats that workout 3-4 times a week and use cardio machines for 30 minutes or more. Yes they break a sweat and feel ok afterward but their bodies look the same year after year.

We recently got a few new crosstrainer machines at our gym. They are the latest model and honestly everyone loves them because they just glide so smoothly. One person said: “It feels like you are not working out at all.” These dedicated gym members get their 20 minutes “fat burn” workout and feel like they got all the exercise they need for the day.

These new crosstrainer machines take all the “work” – out of working out. They are great if your only goal is to go to the gym to socialize and be pampered (nothing wrong with that, many gyms today are just giant spas).

But if you are going to the gym to get results and you are looking to lose some weight then no amount of easy gliding is going to do it for you.

I think most of these new machines are design to make you feel better about yourself today but not designed to get you the results that would make you feel happy with your body for the rest of your life.

The truth is that these crosstrainer machines do not work when your goal is fat loss. They tend to be a total waste of time. You do moderate exercise and the computer gives you some high “calories burn” number that to me just doesn’t feel right. You have a mild sweat and breathe just a little bit heavier than normal. That is not the way to lose fat and get trim.

So you ask what is the answer. What do I do if my goal is to lose fat and get healthy. Well the answer is short intense bodyweight circuits. Its the only way to feel that burn. You end up really sweaty and feel great because of all the heavy breathing. Its a new way of thinking but short intense workouts actually do work at shaping your body into the lean fighting machine it is designed to be.

If the person hip replacement is inevitable, the exercise bike is a great blessing. Precor EFX 5.25 Elliptical Fitness The tool is a sophisticated and beautiful example of the next generation of home fitness equipment. It is so well designed that it can deliver the latest fitness equipment we needed. Stylish design is attractive and I think I do not mind looking like I dominated the space devoted to exercises.

Delivery of the cargo section of the machine. People from non-traditional as my driveway (low hanging branches and gravel drive to prevent or partial Pallet jack for navigation) is to plan ahead. If a company called the day before delivery, I could see that the truck was available. This allowed the driver to easily transfer the box behind the trailer on the back pickup. After the load closer to home with a pickup truck, it was a simple matter to open moving boxes and equipment in the house bit by bit. It would be best if you had 2 strong and able to the body of the device, because it is equipped with wheels and must be performed in one piece. (The weight of the goods of this equipment was over 240 kg.)

After reading the attached, my husband thought the installation of the equipment is not a major challenge. It took him and our 15-year-old daughter, approximately 2 hours to assemble. While the single (strong) the person can work, available for things to keep in place when twisted makes the task much easier and faster. Precor offers the tools needed for assembly (see photo uploaded in the “customer images”), but it appeared that the great need for the extension socket. Note that you do not need a power strip or extension cords to close. Teaching explicitly requires “a wall outlet, otherwise the user’s risk of cancellation of the guarantee. This machine is 120V and the reports must be properly installed in order to maintain the security key.

(By the way, before you decide to switch to contact Precor made the installer and the region in order to make an appointment mount. Representatives of both companies were very helpful and professional and I had no reservations about their help, if needed .)

5.25 is one of the smaller elliptic systems in the house that the engineers Precor. It is very well equipped with movable handles, heart rate sensors, adjustable spot (15 to 25 degrees) and variable voltage / resistance. The move from 18.5 to 20 inches, Precor 5.25 is best for those of us less growth. The 5’5 “, fit me very comfortably, while my husband is 6’3″ not “whole” experience step on this model. (Incidentally, the Precor 5.33 is 21 to 23 inches, while the Precor 5.37 ‘s is a step from 21 to 24.5 inches, what can these models are more suitable for people with long legs.)

Without aping every whistle and bell, as already indicated by the manufacturer on the product page, let me point out a few features that I consider useful. There are 2 programmable user profiles that enable you to progress and check mail settings. On the ground you do not need to start and makes it very easy and natural to their experience of teaching to improve, rather than to stop him. There are several programs to choose from, so you have a large number of challenges (low power), elliptical training, without the “problem” areas, such as weak or malformed hips, knees, etc. .. You can also jump and do a “quick start” and manually enter the settings.

Actual performance is a dream machine. Every movement is so smooth and well balanced machine that actually feels like an extension of the body. There are no hooks or glans, and there are no unpleasant noises from the depths do not know where to stop training. But I remember my husband used the computer (a large, well-educated man, 225 + kg) is a small run of the wheels on the track. The teaching is clear that this is normal and expected, but this does not happen when I train. In accordance with the instructions, “the department tested the strength of 250 kg.

Without doubt, this is one of the most flexible and technologically advanced equipment, gym ever met. While my own experience is limited to industrial equipment at my local gym, cheap offers for “free” gym at the hotel and those on the floor in a “big box” stores, I’ve never been impressed by inferior quality, versatility and intelligent design tool 5.25 Precor.

A solid, very well built piece of machinery

I had never used an elliptical trainer before, not being a gym rat, only stationary bikes, treadmills and Nordic Trak machines. This machine has a heart rate monitor through touch sensitive grips and is programmable for 8 different programs during which the machine automatically changes the pitch of the incline and the resistance. There are two user positions and a guest position. The monitor indicates time spent, or remaining, distance traveled, and calories expended, based on one’s weight. There is a water bottle ledge and a magazine holder. Two small quibbles: The place on which to rest a magazine or book is a shelf between the hand grips but using it blocks the read-out. Also, the ledge for the water bottle doesn’t hold one securely.

The machine arrived very well packaged. I had free assembly provided so a technician installed it. I watched the assembly and it does not appear difficult to do, taking about one half hour. The technician was a former Precor dealer and, thus, very knowledgeable about Precor products. He told me that this model is not manufactured in the U.S., as are the commercial models, but is built in Taiwan, which I cannot confirm. Nevertheless, he was very impressed with the build quality. As am I, it has substantial components and quality bearings, nothing cheap or flimsy about it. Very smooth and quiet running.

It is 25″ wide and about 72″ long. My only concern is the spacing of the foot platforms. I stand, run and cross country ski with my feet closer together than the stance provided by the platforms. In other words, I have to stand on the platforms with my feet pressed against the inner edges. Obviously, comfort “running” on the machine is essential for one to continue to use it and I was not completely comfortable, initially. After some time with it, the machine became easy to use but it does not replicate my natural movement of walking, running or cross-country skiing.

This is a product that I do not believe should be purchased without trying it first.

CheapPrecor EFX 5.25 Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer

Finally!

A home product that feels and looks like the one at the gym but is smaller, lighter and reasonably priced. I tried it at my local fitness store the other day and am going to buy one this week. I think it is even smoother than the one at my gym.Thank you Precor! Keep working on those gym quality machines that will fit in a smaller space at home!

Precor EFX 5.17i

My husband and I love this elliptical. We were familiar with this model from our health club and find it even more appealing now that it’s in our own home! So easy to assemble, we were using it shortly after it arrived. We are looking to add other Precor products to our home gym.

BuyingPrecor EFX 5.17i Elliptical Fitness Crosstrainer [Discontinued]

Solid machine

I have had mine for a number of years. It gets daily, hard use from both myself and my children.

The machine is smooth, solid, and always performs well.

I originally bought it because I used a Precor at a health club for several years. The health club had several other elliptical makes; I preferred the Precors. The differences between this model and the club model are not all that great, certainly not worth paying more money for. For example, this model has a painted steel front ramp on which the wheels roll up and down; the next model up has an aluminum ramp; both ramps do the same job well.

As part of the deal, I received a heart monitor that fits over my chest. The monitor works fine, but I do not use it much.

=====================================================================

Almost gym-quality

I bought the Precor 5.17i. on sale from Sport Chalet for ,000 plus tax. It is very smooth and quiet. It is lacking a hand-grip pulse monitor, but it does work with chest-strap pulse monitors.
I tried other brands that were cheaper, but they felt cheap and wobbly. The Precor machines are solid and stable.
Overall, I am very happy with the 5.17i.

=====================================================================

Better than most home elliptical machines

I purchased this elliptical machine brand new, a few years ago, to alternate with running. I have had other elliptical machines; however, this allows users to obtain a high level of perceived exertion when kept at a high resistance, 15 or 16, out of 20. The ability to adjust incline, benefits all muscles in the lower body, focusing on a few at a time if necessary. It is an added bonus if you do not hang onto the handle bars, giving you the ability to also use your inner core muscles for balance. Yes it is expensive, but if you are one who really works out hard and consistently, it is worth the price.

Treadmills

A treadmill is an exercise machine for running or walking while staying in one place. The machine consists of a moving platform with a conveyor belt driven bu an electric motor or the person doing the exercise themself. The conveyor belt moves allowing the person to walk or run on the spot. Electric powered treadmill allow the speed of the belt to be controlled. Many also allow the platform to be inclined to simulate running up hills.

Crosstrainers

A cross trainer (sometimes called an elliptical trainer) is a stationary exercise machine used to simulate walking or running without causing pressure to the joints. As well as exercising the legs many crosstrainers exercise the upper body too. Crosstrainers are designed to provide a cardiovascular workout rather than build muscles. crosstrainer

Exercise Bikes

Exercise bikes are staionary bikes allowing the user to exercise without actually riding a bike on the road. There are three general types of exercise bikes.

1. Upright – the most common type which keeps the user in a position similar to a normal bike.
2. Recumbent – here the user sits down on a seat with the legs extended almost horizontally to the pedals. This is more comfortable than upright exercise bikes.
3. Training cycles – usually the same as gym spinning class machines.

Steppers

A stepper simulates the action of walking up a set of stairs, so it provides a leg workout. Some steppers may also have arm attachments to work the upper body at the same time.

Rowers

An exercise rower, or rowing machine, is a machine used to simulate the action of rowing a boat for the purpose of exercise or training for rowing. Rowing machines
are a very effective means to get a thorough cardiovascular workout.

Elliptical Cross Trainer

The elliptical trainer was first introduced in the market place in 1995 and is highly recognized as a major development since that time. Reebok was the first to introduce the cross trainer with its moving arms which allows the trainee to develop an upper and lower body workout routine.

Cross trainers are known for:

* Excellent exercises which are easy on the knees, joints and hips

* Low maintenance and maintaining low overhead costs

* Their small size when compared to treadmills

The machines themselves vary in both style and design. A high cross trainer can cost well over a thousand dollars although not everyone can spend this kind of money on a cross trainer. Basic cross trainers cost much less and many of the machines which are sold today include both high quality and construction which is built to last a lifetime.

It only stands to reason that the more expensive the cross trainer is the more elaborate its features and style will be. An important consideration when you decide to purchase a cross trainer is the area where you will house your unit. You will certainly want to select an area that will provide the necessary space for it to reside and enable you to properly use it at any time. You should avoid a situation where the cross trainer does not fit within the space that you have selected.

Some samples presented on the internet display all sorts of optional equipment which is generally sold as accessories. Usually these machines are motorized and will rightfully deliver the needs power to operate it effectively.

Be sure to check on the warranty which comes with the machine. Most units have a one year warranty but are sure to locate a well known brand with an on-site warranty. Often times the manufactures will warrant certain parts for 15 years while others are guaranteed for only two years.

What are the programs and how do l benefit?

It is very difficult to exercise with your routines when you are both the trainee and the trainer. For this reason alone the idea of purchasing a cross trainer with a guide may be the proper course of action to take. These guides will have a pre-set or customizable program to increase your motivation towards using your exercise equipment on a daily basis.

Some of the more expensive machines now provide a controlled heart beat program to monitor your heart rate. By following the included instructions you can decrease or increase your heart rate by modifying the resistance of the cross trainer. This simple act makes your heart beat close to the pre- programmed rate. This method represents a safe way to exercise and keep your body in shape while enjoying the benefits of increased weight loses.

Elliptical Exercise

The process of exercising is currently becoming the most popular means of improving ones fitness especially when the exerciser desires to tone their body up and improve their physical health.

The Elliptical machine provides an enjoyable exercise routine for many people who desire to exercise and need to develop their endurance slowly. These people need to exercise with ease while at the same time making use of the various muscles within their body. These machines make use of movements which are basically the same as running, jogging or cycling. Many people have discovered that these machines are essential for their exercise performance at home. With one of these great machines in your home you will find no need to visit the local gym in order to workout. Even if you visit the gym you will more then likely find this equipment within your gym surroundings.

The machines are readily available for your home and they have been made cost effective so that everyone can afford one. You can often times purchase your new exercise equipment on installment plans where you make monthly payments. Many times you can find the same equipment available online enabling you to make effective comparison studies of the prices as well as reading the various reviews often posted by current owners of the equipment.

Elliptical equipment is very durable offering very high standards of manufacture and usually comes with a manufacturer’s guarantee that topically states that if you the customer are not 100% satisfied you can receive a complete refund of your purchase price. This refund policy is not the sales stores or the salesman policy but the manufacturer themselves. They fully feel that if you are not satisfied with the product that you should rightfully be able to return it and get your money back.

It isn’t necessary to exert a tremendous amount of pressure on the equipment while exercising as the equipment is quite flexible in allowing you to be able to adjust the speeds and with selection of the training programs that are pre-installed. The machine is very easy to use and it comes with a simple to understand manual and a DVD to help you through your workouts.

The equipment claims to be better for exercising than other exercise activities such as the use of treadmills or jogging and does not require considerable pressure to be effective. This machine can be readily used by those individuals who need to burn off excess weight and helps them develop abdominal muscles.

If you have never tried out this type of exercise equipment previously then I would recommend that you visit your local gym or perhaps purchase one of your own and feel for yourself how wonderful you can actually feel. You will more then be likely satisfied with the results that you see. Keep in mind that this is the same equipment that you will find in the local gym. If you happen to be the kind of person who keeps his or her body in great shape then this machine is for you.
